At the Waal Crossing Memorial, a solemn ceremony took place to commemorate the heroic crossing of the Waal River by American soldiers of the 82nd Airborne Division, during the Operation Market Garden, now 81 years ago. The ceremony counted on the presence of paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division of the USA and war veterans. Although Operation Market Garden was unsuccessful, the Americans and British were able to liberate Nijmegen, the Netherlands’ oldest city, after fierce fighting.
