Sierra Leone's government sold one of its most precious ecotourism assets, the 100-hectare pristine forest and beach at Black Jhonson, for around USD 55 million. This was being sold to a Chinese state-owned enterprise for the construction of a fishing harbour. According to the authorities, this project will allow tuna vessels and other fishing vessels to anchor which could bring more fish to local markets and increase export capacity. However, locals say this project is a human and ecological disaster as it will force the residents to relocate, fishers will be unable to fish and the market will struggle to buy and sell.
