A new 2 megawatt solar power plant has been commissioned at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant to provide power for the station's critical infrastructure, including the New Safe Confinement and spent nuclear fuel storage facilities. The solar panels were provided by the government of Lithuania with the support of the United Nations Development Programme and Japan, and the generation itself covers about 5% of the industrial site's annual consumption. Such on-site generation makes the ChNPP more resilient and less dependent on external power supply, and is one of the necessary conditions for nuclear and radiation safety.
