The devastating floods in Nepal’s Himalayas have put a sharper spotlight on Kashmir’s preparedness for sudden high-altitude floods, with five glacial lakes in the valley already classified as having “very high susceptibility” to Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs).
The August 26 disaster sent water, ice, mud, and debris through valleys in Nepal and Tibet, killing more than 1,300 people.
