The provisions were revoked on August 5, 2019, by India's Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government, which also reorganized the region into two federally administered union territories. Political parties in Jammu and Kashmir observed the anniversary as "Black Day", staging protests and calling for the restoration of the region's constitutional guarantees and full statehood.
