Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, is observed by Shiite Muslims around the world in remembrance of Imam Hussain, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, who was killed along with members of his family and companions in the Battle of Karbala in present day Iraq in 680 AD.
