The celebration of Eid al-Adha commemorates the willingness of the Prophet Abraham (Ibrahim to Christians and Jews) to sacrifice his son. During the holiday which lasts approximately four days, Muslims slaughter sheep or cattle distribute part of the meat to the poor and eat the rest.
