On May 16, 2026, a rally organized by the Ukrainian community was held in Gdańsk to honor the defenders of Mariupol and the soldiers who were taken prisoner by Russia and remain in captivity. The release of the defenders of Mariupol is taking place gradually as part of successive prisoner-of-war exchanges between Ukraine and Russia. It is estimated that between several hundred and over a thousand soldiers from the Mariupol garrison alone remain imprisoned in Russian camps and detention centers. A dance performance took place during the rally.
