During a solemn ceremony, His Majesty King Philip VI of Spain will take possession of the title of Protocanon of the Chapter of the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. The Liberian Chapter is composed of the Cardinal Archpriest and twelve Canons as established by its Statutes by ancient privilege, His Majesty the King of Spain is its Protocanon.
The ties between the Basilica and the Crown of Spain are deeply rooted over the centuries, Iberian sovereigns, ecclesiastics, and faithful have supported the sanctuary, contributing to its life, protection, and dignity.
The ceremony will crown the official visit of His Majesty Philip VI and Queen Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano to the Vatican following the Audience granted to them by His Holiness Pope Leo XIV renewing this long and happy tradition.
