The city is located on the outskirts of Damascus and was the largest Palestinian refugee camp in the country. Beginning in 2012, it endured intense bombardments and fighting between Palestinian factions opposed to the Al-Assad regime and the terrorist group ISIS. This triggered an extreme humanitarian crisis and the near-total destruction of its infrastructure.
