In early spring, Kawazu-zakura an early-blooming cherry tree variety with vibrant deep-pink blossoms attracts two common nectar feeding birds. The mejiro or Japanese white-eye (Zosterops japonicus) is a tiny, agile green bird with a distinctive white ring around its eyes. It darts acrobatically among the flowers using its slender bill to sip the sweet nectar from Kawazu-zakura blooms often appearing in flocks and adding lively movement to the pink canopy. The hiyodori or brown-eared bulbul (Hypsipetes amaurotis) is a larger, more vocal bird with a brownish body and distinctive calls. It perches boldly on branches to feed on the nectar frequently visiting these early cherry trees and bringing lively sound and presence to the scene. Together, these birds the delicate, ninja-fast mejiro and the bolder hiyodori create charming natural spectacles amid the Kawazu-zakura 's early February to March display especially in places like the Izu Peninsula, Tokyo area spots and Kawazu town festivals.
