Students Organize Therian Gathering in Mexico City by Gerardo Vieyra / SOPA Images
This Friday, February 20, 2026, dozens of people gathered at Las Islas on the campus of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) to observe and interact with the Therian subculture, whose members identify as animals and "experience a deep, psychological, or spiritual connection with an animal."
According to the Therian subculture, their activities may include group dynamics, quadrobics (movement on all fours), the use of animal masks and accessories, and spaces for sharing experiences related to this identity.
The term "therian" is an abbreviation of "therianthrope" (therianthropy), derived from the Greek words "thēríon" (beast) and "ánthrōpos" (human). Its approximate translation is "animal person" or "human animal."
