Tradition to awaken people during Ramzan in Kashmir, India
The centuries old tradition continues in parts of Indian administered Kashmir, where drummers move through neighbourhoods before dawn, though many residents say the practice is fading with the use of mobile phone alarms and changing urban life. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, during which Muslims worldwide fast from dawn to sunset, refraining from food, drink and marital intimacy as a form of spiritual reflection, prayer and charity. Muslims believe the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad during this month.
