Mushroom pickers protest deforestation. Warsaw, Poland. 13 Feb 2026 by Neil Milton / SOPA Images
On the afternoon of the 13th of February, women of the "Rydz" Mushroom Collecting Club and their activist friends from Warsaw join a demonstration outside the Ministry of Climate and Environment to defend the Bieszczady forests. For two years, two Bieszczady forest districts, Lutowiska and Stuposiany, have been cutting down the Carpathian forests without an approved Forest Management Plan. Despite a ministerial moratorium, foresters in most of these areas have planned felling within the next 10 years. Foresters want to cut over 90% of the area of these two forest districts. This is unacceptable for Poland's traditional mushroom pickers. Protesters wear traditional Polish attire and carry mushroom baskets. They make speeches, dance, and hold placards and banners.
