On February 6, 2023, devastating earthquakes struck southeastern Turkey and northern Syria, killing more than 53,500 people according to official figures. Two million people were left homeless. As the third anniversary of the earthquakes approaches, infrastructure problems persist in Antakya district of Hatay, which suffered the most damage, while a new urbanization process is underway.
