Blackouts in Berlin, Germany by Vasily Krestyaninov / SOPA Images
A targeted arson attack on critical electricity infrastructure in southwestern Berlin caused a large-scale power outage affecting the Zehlendorf district and surrounding areas. The attack damaged high-voltage power cables on a bridge crossing the Teltow Canal, leading to a blackout that left approximately 45,000 residents without electricity, along with businesses, hospitals and nursing homes.
The disruption forced the closure of parts of the S-Bahn network, prompted the deployment of police and emergency services, and led authorities to open emergency shelters and warming centers for affected residents. Utility crews continue repair work, with electricity gradually being restored, though many households remain without power.
