Daily life in the Yarmouk refugee camp for Palestinians in Damascus, Syria. by Amadeusz Swierk / SOPA Images
The Yarmouk refugee camp in Damascus, established in 1957 to house Palestinian refugees, once thrived as a densely populated neighborhood with shops, schools, and vibrant community life. During Syria's civil war, the camp became a battleground between government forces and various armed groups, enduring years of siege, bombardment, and street fighting that left most of its buildings destroyed and its population scattered. Today, Yarmouk stands as a vast landscape of hollowed apartment blocks and rubble-filled streets, where a small number of residents have begun returning to rebuild their lives amid the ruins.
