The Moubhandar copper smelter near Jamshedpur in eastern India operated by state-run Hindustan Copper Limited has remained idle since 2019 due to high costs and environmental concerns. Efforts to expand domestic copper production to meet global demand for critical minerals essential to electric vehicles and renewable energy while raising fresh concerns over pollution and water safety for nearby communities along the Subarnarekha River are in place.
