Free Abortion Rally in Quito, Ecuador by Veronica Lombeida / SOPA Images
Seven days have passed since the national protests began with an immediate and indefinite strike. Each day, tensions have been rising: repression, arbitrary detentions, injuries, more than ten people have been accused of terrorism and transferred to one of the most dangerous prisons in the country. Today, state violence claimed a life, Efraín, a member of the Inguintzala community, was killed in Pinsaquí, Imbabura, at 6:30 a.m. He was shot three times and, even after he fell, was kicked along with his companion who was trying to help him. The news of his murder coincides with September 28, World Day for Free, Safe, and Legal Abortion. In Quito, hundreds of people took to the streets demanding free abortion, justice for the 12 of Otavalo, justice for Efraín, an end to repression, and the rejection of Noboa's economic package.
