Some farmers still plant rice using traditional methods by hand sowing paddy seedlings in flooded fields. The practice preserves cultural heritage for the young generation knowledge as the industry has moved into modern technics with a machinery use. It also faces mounting global pressure such as climate change, low wage fares and the rapid push toward industrial agriculture. According to UN Food and Agriculture Organization, rice feeds more than half of the world population. The temperatures and erratic rainfall also threaten yields of crops across Asia where 90% of global rice is produced. The survival of this traditional method is now entwined with the world's broader struggle for food security.
