Wipha's Fury: Mae Sot Floods Disrupt Life on Thai-Myanmar Border by Paschal Zayar / SOPA Images
Heavy rain from Severe Tropical Storm Wipha caused widespread and severe flooding across northern Thailand in late July 2025, with the event being described as the worst in decades for some provinces. In areas like Mae Sot, Tak Province, the continuous rain caused local streams to overflow and submerge roads. The situation became much more serious when the Moei River (also known as the Thaungyin River), which forms the border between Thailand and Myanmar, rose to dangerous levels. This led to major flooding in communities on both sides: Mae Sot, Thailand, and the neighboring town of Myawaddy, Myanmar. Although the Thai government had issued mobile phone alerts, the speed of the rising water caught many residents off guard, and authorities continue to warn of more rain in Tak and other affected provinces.
