The Ukraine - Russia conflict is progressing and stretching into its fourth year, compared to the first year of the war, the current flood of refugees has been shrinking which resulted in the dropping demand of the refugee shelters in Poland near the Poland-Ukraine border.
Hope Shelter, located in Przemyśl and founded in 2022, remains one of the very few short-term refuges near the border. The shelter is currently operated by 10-15 volunteers with no paid staff, they work nearly 12 hours a day to keep providing support for up to 50 refugees a week with minimal resources. Because of the dropped demand in refugee support, the fundings and aid avaliable to the shelter have significantly decreased. With the increased difficulties to access new grants, the shelter is put under a desperate situation against the shrinking yet ongoing Ukrainian refugee crisis. According to the volunteers, in the worst-case scenario, the operation of shelter might stop in September, which is unlikely to be the time for the war to end.
