Eleventh Day of Muharram procession in Budgam, India - 8 Jul 2025 by Idrees Abbas / SOPA Images
Thousands of Shia mourners participated in Muharram processions to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain. On Saturday, the Jammu and Kashmir Police registered a case against several Shia mourners for displaying banners featuring Hezbollah commander Hassan Nasrallah during the procession.
In the wake of heightened tensions following the Iran–US conflict, posters and banners depicting Iranian and Hezbollah leaders, along with pro-Palestine slogans, have become increasingly visible in Kashmir. Shia communities in the region often express solidarity with the people of Iran and Palestine during Muharram observances.
However, police allege that these actions were aimed at provoking unrest, disturbing public order, and undermining communal harmony—calling them a serious threat to the security and integrity of the nation.
