Amid tight security, Indian authorities allowed the 8th Muharram procession to pass through its traditional route for the third consecutive year after over three decades. This procession was banned in 1989 during a rebellion against New Delhi's rule. Shiite Muslims commemorate Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar as a month of mourning for the death of Prophet Muhammad's grandson, Imam Hussain who was killed in the battle of Karbala in 680 A.D.
