Polluted Mithi River in Mumbai, India in Mumbai, India by Ashish Vaishnav / SOPA Images
Mithi River originates from Vihar and Powai lake and passes through the city before it meets Arabian sea. It is heavily polluted and becoming narrow due to urban development and slums mushrooming on its bank. The river is polluted with waste from nearby slums and solid waste like plastic, construction debris, household garbage and cattle waste. Nearby industries discharge hazardous waste and effluents thereby adding to water pollution and danger to marine life in a big way. pollution has reduced its water carrying capacity leading to stagnation and high risk of flooding in and around the slums on its bank especially during the monsoon season.
