Crisis for Kashmiri Nomads after Pahalgam militant attack in Peer Ki Gali, India - 13 Jun 2025 by Faisal Bashir/SOPA Images
The Gujjar and Bakarwal pastoralist community are among the most vulnerable secluded tribes in the region facing a crisis following the April 22 attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 Hindu tourists and triggered the worst military escalation between nuclear rivals India and Pakistan in decades. The closures threaten livestock health and endanger a centuries-old migratory herding tradition that underpins their livelihood and cultural identity.
