The end of USAID and the cutback of humanitarian aid from other international organisations and agencies has wreaked havoc on the hard-hit people of Tigray. According to some displaced people who have been living in the ‘70 Kare IDP centre’ since the beginning of the war, the last time they received bags of wheat from USAID was in December 2024.
Since Trump came to power, all packages of wheat or flour from organisations that continue to deliver humanitarian aid have dropped from 15 kilograms to 9 kilograms per person. The last time they received bags of wheat at the 70 Kare IDP centre was in February 2025. The impact is not only reflected in the delivery of humanitarian aid, but also in the supply of medication with a deadly impact on the population who cannot afford the new costs. ‘Before Trump this allergy cream for my eight-month-old baby's face cost 300 Bir (€2.11), now it costs 1,500 Bir (€10.56),’ said Fana, a displaced Tigrayan who has been living in the camp since the start of the war.
