The naval base is a major U.S. Navy base located in Kanagawa Prefecture. The base serves as the homeport for the U.S. Seventh Fleet's forward deployed aircraft carrier, USS Ronald Reagan along with other ships including destroyers and cruisers. It is the largest overseas U.S. naval installation and plays a critical role in maintaining U.S. military presence and operations in the Indo-Pacific region. The base also hosts the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) sharing facilities and fostering U.S.-Japan military cooperation under the U.S.-Japan Security Treaty. It covers approximately 579 acres with extensive infrastructure including ship repair facilities, piers and support services for personnel and families.
