Tens of thousands of people gathered in the Cizre district to celebrate Newroz also known as Noruz or Nevruz which marks the new year according to the Persian calendar. Millions of people across the Middle East, Asia and Eastern Europe are celebrating the Newroz festival which signifies the arrival of spring. In 1992, dozens of people were killed during Newroz celebrations in Cizre.
