Ekrem Imamoglu, the mayor of the Republican People's Party (CHP) Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality was detained along with dozens of his aides and party members on charges of “corruption” and “leading a criminal organization”. Calling it a political conspiracy and a coup against democracy, the opposition took to the streets in many cities across Turkey in protest.
