Authorities in Kashmir are implementing a geo-tagging initiative for thousands of 'Chinar' trees to establish a detailed database aimed at their management and conservation. This effort is crucial in light of threats posed by increasing urbanization, road expansion projects and various diseases. The Chinar trees hold significant cultural and ecological value in the Himalayan Kashmir region yet hundreds have been lost over recent decades. As part of the geo-tagging process, each surveyed tree is assigned a QR code that captures data on 25 different characteristics such as its geographical location, health status, age and growth patterns. This information will enable conservationists to monitor changes and mitigate potential risks.
