Lake Naivasha attracts a variety of animals that include buffalo, antelope, giraffe, warthog and monkey, and you will almost certainly catch sight of hippos lazily watching proceedings from the cooling water. The Lake also plays host to a variety of birdlife; more than 400 species have been recorded here. Many can be spotted along the shoreline – from pelicans and fish eagles to weavers and warblers. Naivasha is derived from Nai'posha from the massai dialect which means "rough waters.” It is a name that represents the mighty lake. Lake Naivasha stands out in the Kenyan rift valley by having the highest elevation at a frightening 1,884 meters.
