Every year, on December 31st and February 2nd, crowds gather along Brazilian beaches, notably in Salvador and Rio de Janeiro, to present offerings to Iemanjá, the goddess of the sea, a deity celebrated in Afro-Brazilian cults such as Candomblé and Umbanda. She is the mother of the Orixás, the deities of nature. Most participants wear white as a sign of purity and peace.
