Western house martin decreases in Rebollo de Duero, Spain by Jorge Sanz / SOPA Images
In this Spanish village there is an important colony of Western house martin, between 150 and 200 pairs. This year, a third of its nests have probably been broken by barn owls (Tyto alba) or little owl (Athene noctua), other possible predators are eurasian magpie (Pica pica), great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) or beech marten (Martes foina).
Predators break the nests to enter them and eat the eggs or chicks. As a result, the population of these birds will be considerably reduced this year.
