Abdullah Zeydan of the DEM Party (Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party), who was elected Mayor of Van Metropolitan Municipality, was deprived of his right to be elected and the Provincial Electoral Board decided to give a license to the AKP (Justice and Development Party) candidate. This is the first time in the history of the Republic of Turkey. This was described as a blow to the right to vote and be elected. Press statements and protests were organized in many provinces, especially in Van. In Hatay, a press statement was held carrying Abdullah Zeydan's photographs.
