Votes were also cast for 2024 municipal elections in the city of Diyarbakir, which has the largest Kurdish population in Turkey and is the center of the Kurdish opposition. In the municipal elections in 2019, the Kurdish opposition won a total of 65 municipalities, including 3 metropolitan municipalities, 5 provinces, 45 districts and 12 towns. However, the Turkish State administration appointed trustees to 48 of these municipalities. The municipalities won by the Kurds have been run by trustees for 8 years. With this election, the Kurdish opposition will regain control of the municipalities in the region where Kurds live densely.
