Ultra-Orthodox Jews Celebrate Purim in Bnei Brak, Israel. The holiday commemorates the salvation of the Jews in ancient Persia from a plot to annihilate them. A joyous holiday, it is celebrated by both secular and nonsecular Jews, most notably by dressing up in costumes and drinking, according to the Talmud, “until he cannot distinguish between ‘cursed is Haman’ and ‘blessed is Mordechai.’”
