Celebration of the ancestral carnival of Unanua, Navarra
On the slopes of Mount Beriain, the ancestral carnival of Unanua is celebrated, Mamuxarros and Mutuak beat the ground and the attendees with their hazel sticks, ringing their 12 bells, one for each month of the year. Their faces are covered with brass masks called Katolas. The mamuxarros dressed in white shirts, pulgueros (long johns), red sashes and scarves covering their heads and part of their faces, are accompanied by the so-called muttus (mutes in Basque), they are dressed in brightly colored clothing and sometimes wear women's clothing. , these do not carry bells, so as not to be heard. They go around the town smacking the hazelnut stick in endless chases and races through the town of Unanua.
