The first Saturday after November 11th, the red-and-white-clad Sinterklaas (St. Nicholas) arrives with great fanfare in several Dutch cities. In Nijmegen, the white-bearded legend makes his entrance into the city by sailing down the river and following a route through the city accompanied by his helpers, the Pieten (Peters) who were giving traditional candies to children and adults.
