Umbrellas raised at Al-Aqsa mosque before Ramadan in Jerusalem, Israel by Saeed Qaq / SOPA Images
Palestinians set up umbrellas in the courtyards of Al-Aqsa Mosque to protect worshipers from the heat of the sun ahead. The holy month of Ramadan is distinct among Muslims and has a special status from the rest of the months of the Hijri year. It is the month of fasting, which is considered one of the pillars of Islam, during which Muslims refrain (except for those who have a valid excuse) from food and drink, as well as from a group of prohibitions that nullify fasting from dawn until sunset.
