Scars of war in Izyum, Kharkiv region, Ukraine by Mykhaylo Palinchak / SOPA Images
Six months after the retreat of the Russian army, life in Izyum is gradually getting better, with electricity and water available, but the townspeople still suffer from the cold: broken boilers do not work and locals warm themselves with huts. The city is no longer under fire, but the risk of an explosion is still high: mines, tripwires or unexploded shells are still everywhere. Izyum was liberated on 10 September 2022 during an Armed forces of Ukraine counter-offensive in the Kharkiv region. The city has been badly damaged by Russian shelling and occupation - 80% of the buildings there have been damaged. The biggest problem is the shortage of communal equipment, which has either been stolen or destroyed. Mass graves of Ukrainian civilians and Ukrainian servicemen have been found in the vicinity of Izyum, including signs of torture.
