The tradition of the fake peasant wedding during carnival dates back to the sixteenth century, the nobility played the role of the peasants and the peasants were the lords. In Nijmegen, Anja and Theo Wijlemans were the farmer's wedding couple, this year. The couple gathered at the Valkhof chapel, wearing traditional farmer's clothes and surrounded by people wearing vibrant costumes. The farmer's wedding is one of the Dutch Carnival traditions, especially in Limburg, North Brabant, and Gelderland. The reversal ritual was the essence of the carnival at the time.
