Alsasua Carnival in Navarra, Spain by Elsa A Bravo / SOPA Images
Carnival celebration in Alsasua 2023, ancestral and rural carnival. Momotxorros as a typical character of the act.
The Momotxorro is a character of unknown origin from the Alsasua carnival: he is half man and half bull. He carries large horns that hang from a basket that serves as a head. Ahead, they wear a white cloth stained with animal blood. He walks the streets with his sarde (the gallows) frightening and "attacking" whoever is in his path. They wear horns and cover their faces with scarves or horse bristles. They wear a white shirt stained with blood, and sheepskins. They raise noise with cowbells sewn to the sheepskin or slung around the waist. They attack with the sarde.
