Each year on the 3rd Saturday of January, the National Tulip Day is celebrated in Amsterdam. Dutch tulip growers built a huge picking garden with more than 200,000 colorful tulips at the Museumplein in Amsterdam. Visitors are allowed to pick tulips for free. The special event is the official start of the international tulip season that runs until the end of April. The theme this year is 'Typical Dutch'. The event was opened by Olympic skating champion, Irene Schouten. Prior to the opening, she christened a new tulip: Tulipa 'Dutch Pearl' as a reference to the world-famous painting 'The girl with a pearl earring' by Johannes Vermeer.
