Plastic Waste Recycling in Nakuru, Kenya by James Wakibia / SOPA Images
The growing problem of plastic waste ending up in the environment is becoming a concern and environmentalists are calling for more investments in the infrastructure to recycle plastic to promote circular economy and reduce plastic pollution. They are also asking the government to introduce a mandatory bottle deposit and refund scheme (DRS) which will give value to plastic drink bottles commonly known as pet (polyethylene terephthalate). Deposit refund scheme is a system where consumers pay a small amount of money upfront called a deposit, to be reimbursed to them when they return the container to a shop or collection center.
