A visit to the only recently reconciled Hezb-i Islami in the Afghan Field
Hezb-i Islami led by Gulbuddin Hekmatyar is an insurgent group that gained bloody notoriety during the anti-Soviet Afghan jihad in the 1980s and the subsequent Afghan civil war in the 1990s. Although the group has signed a peace accord with the Afghan government on 29th of September 2016 – the first such accord with an insurgent group since the overthrow of the Taliban regime in 2001 – local chapters of Hezb-i Islami remain armed and sometimes even belligerent. One example is a group of Hezb-i Islami that virtually completely controls the remote district of Shigal in Afghanistan's eastern province of Kunar.
