Protests Mong Kok - November 13/14 by Oliver Haynes / SOPA Images
Protests standoff with police in Mong Kok. The protest movement has seen a spike in violence since the death of university student Alex Chow on November 9, after falling from the ledge of a car park while reportedly fleeing tear gas fired by police. Despite the controversial extradition bill which originally sparked the protests being formally withdrawn, protesters continue to call on Chief Executive Carrie Lam to meet their remaining demands, which includes complete universal suffrage, an independent investigation into police brutality, retraction of the word ‘rioting’ to describe the protests, and dropping all charges against arrested protesters.
