Trashumance For Endangered Serrana Cows in Almarza, Spain by John Milner / SOPA Images
The village of Almarza, Soria province, north of Spain, celebrates a transhumance of cows in defense of the cow endangered species Serrana Soriana, which is native to this region. The number of herds of Serrana Soriana cows in this Spanish province have declined between a 95% and 98% in the last decades due to advanced age of the shepherds and ranchers, the depopulation, and the high production costs.
