Energy bill price cap comes into effect on 1 Jan by Dinendra Haria / SOPA Images
One burning ring is seen on a gas cooker. A new energy price cap will come into force from 1 January 2019, saving 11 million customers an average of £76 a year on their gas and electricity bills. The move will see 11 million households on default deals save about £76 on average, although the amount households could save will depend on their usage and supplier. The planned cap will stay in place until 2023. The regulator Ofgem has set the final level of the cap at £1,137 a year for a typical dual fuel customer paying their bill by direct debit. It means suppliers will have to cut the price of their default tariffs to the level of the cap or below it. The cap level will be updated in April and October every year.
