One year on, security forces are on alert across parts of Indian-administered Kashmir to mark the first anniversary of the May 7 escalation that followed a deadly militant attack in Pahalgam, where gunmen killed 26 civilians, mostly tourists, on April 22, 2025. The assault, one of the deadliest against civilians in recent years, triggered heightened tensions between nuclear-armed rivals India and Pakistan, culminating in cross-border strikes by India after it launched Operation Sindoor targeting alleged militant infrastructure, followed by retaliatory firing and heightened military alert by Pakistan along the Line of Control, before a ceasefire understanding was later reaffirmed by both sides after international diplomatic efforts. Indian authorities say Operation Sindoor remains ongoing.
